JOB SUMMARY

A Mason is a skilled tradesperson who constructs, repairs, and maintains structures made of brick, block, stone, and other materials. This role involves a blend of artistry and craftsmanship, as Masons work on both residential and commercial projects, creating durable structures that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Masons may also specialize in a particular type of masonry, such as bricklaying, stonemasonry, or tile setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Construction and Installation:
    • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine project requirements.
    • Cut, shape, and lay bricks, stones, block, and other masonry units according to plans.
    • Mix mortar and binders and apply them to the masonry units to secure them in place.
    • Construct masonry walls, walkways, patios, and other structures, ensuring proper alignment and level.
  • Repair and Maintenance:
    • Inspect existing masonry structures to assess damage and identify necessary repairs.
    • Remove damaged bricks, stones, or mortar, and replace them with new materials.
    • Fill and seal gaps in masonry structures to prevent water infiltration and decay.
    • Restore historical masonry through careful repair and replication of original materials and techniques.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Utilize a variety of hand and power tools, including trowels, chisels, levels, saws, and mixers.
    • Maintain and care for tools and equipment, ensuring they are in safe, working condition.
  • Project Management:
    • Collaborate with general contractors, architects, and other tradespeople to ensure the successful completion of projects.
    • Report on project progress and challenges to supervisors or clients.
    • Manage materials and supplies, ensuring efficient use and minimizing waste.
  • Health and Safety:
    • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations to maintain a safe work environment.
    • Wear protective gear and follow proper practices when handling heavy materials and using power tools.
    • Conduct risk assessments and maintain awareness of site hazards.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • High school diploma or equivalent; completion of an apprenticeship program in masonry or related fields is preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in masonry or a related construction field.
  • Proven experience in laying brick, stone, and block in both residential and commercial settings.
  • Familiarity with various masonry techniques and styles, including traditional and contemporary methods.
  • Experience in repairing and restoring masonry structures, with a strong understanding of materials and restoration techniques.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, demonstrating effective communication skills with clients and tradespeople.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes, safety regulations, and construction practices.
  • Experience in evaluating and selecting appropriate materials for different projects and conditions.
