Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Loader is responsible for the safe and efficient loading, unloading, moving, arranging and handling of materials, goods, equipment and other items at the worksite, warehouse, construction site or designated location.The role involves physical handling of materials and requires the employee to follow instructions from supervisors, observe safety procedures and ensure that materials are properly handled and positioned to prevent damage, loss or injury.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Loading and Unloading
Load and unload materials, goods, tools, equipment and other items from trucks, containers and delivery vehicles.
Assist drivers and other site personnel during loading and unloading operations.
Ensure materials are handled carefully to prevent damage during loading and transportation.
Arrange items properly to ensure safe and efficient loading.
Check that items being loaded or unloaded correspond with instructions from the supervisor or relevant documentation.
Assist in securing materials properly where required.
Manuel Handling of Materials
Lift, carry, push, pull and move materials from one location to another as instructed.
Handle materials such as cement, blocks, sand, aggregates, pipes, timber, steel, tools, machinery parts, cartons and other site materials.
Use appropriate manual handling techniques to reduce the risk of injury.
Ask for assistance when an item is too heavy or difficult to move safely.
Work with other loaders and site workers when handling large, heavy or awkward materials
Vehicle Loading and Unloading Support
Assist with loading and unloading delivery trucks and other vehicles.
Ensure materials are distributed properly within the vehicle where required.
Assist in securing loads under the direction of the driver or supervisor.
Ensure the loading area is clear before loading or unloading begins.
Follow instructions regarding the safe positioning of vehicles during loading and unloading.
Never climb onto vehicles or containers without following the required safety procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
No formal academic qualification is necessarily required, depending on the employer’s requirements.
Previous experience in loading, unloading, construction, warehousing, logistics or general site work will be an advantage.
Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Previous experience working on a construction site, warehouse or industrial environment is an added advantage
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT
Standing and walking for extended periods.
Lifting and carrying materials.
Bending, squatting and reaching.
Loading and unloading vehicles.
Working outdoors and in varying weather conditions where applicable.
Working around construction materials, vehicles and equipment.
