JOB SUMMARY
The Lathe Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining lathe machines for precise machining tasks. This role requires a thorough understanding of machining processes, blueprints, and quality control measures to produce accurate and high-quality components.
Key Responsibilities:
- Machine Setup:
- Set up lathe machines according to specifications, including selecting appropriate tools, workpieces, and settings.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to determine machining sequences and specifications.
- Adjust machine settings for optimal performance, including speed, feed rate, and tool positioning.
- Operation:
- Operate lathe machines to perform various machining tasks, such as turning, threading, and drilling, according to production requirements.
- Monitor the machining process to ensure consistency and quality, making adjustments as necessary.
- Measure and inspect finished parts using precise measuring instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
- Quality Control:
- Conduct quality checks regularly throughout the production process to ensure compliance with specifications and tolerances.
- Document inspection results and maintain accurate records of production data for quality assurance purposes.
- Identify any defects or irregularities in machined components and take corrective actions as required.
- Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance on lathe machines, including lubrication, cleaning, and understanding mechanical breakdowns.
- Report any malfunctions or required repairs to supervisors and assist with troubleshooting as needed.
- Ensure that all safety devices and guards are functioning correctly for safe operation.
- Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for oneself and fellow employees.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required, including safety glasses, ear protection, and gloves.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with team members, engineering, and quality assurance teams to achieve production goals and meet deadlines.
- Communicate any production issues, suggestions for improvement, or needed resources to supervisors.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Participate in training and workshops to enhance skills and stay updated on new machining technologies and methods.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives and efficiency strategies within the machining department.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education or vocational training in machining or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience operating lathe machines or similar equipment.
- Familiarity with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathe machines is an advantage.
Skills:
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills to understand measurements and calculations.
- Proficient in reading technical drawings and blueprints.
- Excellent attention to detail and precision in work, with a focus on quality.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
- Effective communication skills for collaboration and reporting.
Work Environment:
- The position is typically performed in a manufacturing or machine shop environment.
- May involve standing for extended periods and the use of heavy machinery.
- Exposure to noise, metal shavings, and coolant is common; safety measures must be strictly followed.
