Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

A Mechanical Fitter is responsible for assembling, installing, maintaining, and repairing mechanical systems and machinery used in industrial, construction, and manufacturing environments. The role involves interpreting technical drawings, fitting mechanical components, aligning equipment, and ensuring that machinery operates efficiently and safely. The Mechanical Fitter works closely with engineers, technicians, and maintenance teams to ensure equipment reliability and minimize operational downtime.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Installation and Assembly of Mechanical Equipment

  • Assemble and install mechanical systems, machinery, and equipment according to technical drawings and specifications.
  • Fit and align components such as shafts, bearings, gears, valves, pumps, and motors.
  • Install mechanical parts including belts, couplings, seals, and pipes.
  • Ensure proper alignment and fitting of machine components during installation.

2. Maintenance and Repair

  • Perform routine maintenance on mechanical equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Inspect machinery for wear, damage, or malfunction.
  • Repair or replace faulty components such as bearings, seals, gears, and shafts.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance tasks to reduce equipment breakdowns.

3. Troubleshooting Mechanical Issues

  • Diagnose mechanical faults and identify the root cause of equipment problems.
  • Use appropriate tools and testing equipment to assess equipment condition.
  • Implement corrective actions to restore equipment functionality.

4. Reading Technical Drawings

  • Interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and engineering diagrams.
  • Follow specifications and measurements provided in technical documents.
  • Ensure assembled components match design requirements and tolerances.

5. Equipment Alignment and Calibration

  • Align rotating equipment such as motors, pumps, and compressors.
  • Adjust machine components to achieve proper fit and operation.
  • Use precision tools such as dial indicators and micrometers for alignment.

6. Tool and Equipment Handling

  • Use mechanical tools and equipment including:
    • Spanners and wrenches
    • Torque tools
    • Grinding machines
    • Drilling machines
    • Measuring instruments
  • Ensure proper maintenance and safe use of tools.

7. Safety Compliance

  • Follow workplace safety procedures during installation and maintenance activities.
  • Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety helmets, gloves, goggles, and protective clothing.
  • Ensure machinery is properly isolated and locked out during maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Diploma or Technical Certificate in:

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechanical Maintenance
  • Industrial Technology
  • Fitting and Machining or related technical field.
