Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
A Shearing Machine Operator is responsible for operating metal shearing machines to cut sheets, plates, and other metal materials into specified sizes and shapes according to engineering drawings and production requirements. The role involves setting up the shearing machine, measuring materials accurately, ensuring precise cuts, and maintaining quality standards while following workplace safety procedures. The operator works closely with fabricators, welders, and supervisors to support efficient production in fabrication workshops and manufacturing plants.
Key Responsibilities
1. Machine Setup and Operation
- Set up and operate mechanical, hydraulic, or CNC shearing machines to cut metal sheets and plates.
- Adjust machine settings including blade clearance, back gauge, and cutting angles according to material thickness and specifications.
- Ensure machines are properly calibrated before beginning cutting operations.
- Operate foot pedals, control panels, and safety mechanisms during machine operation.
2. Material Measurement and Preparation
- Measure and mark metal sheets using measuring tools such as tape measures, rulers, and gauges.
- Position metal sheets correctly on the machine for accurate cutting.
- Verify material thickness and type before processing.
- Ensure materials match production specifications and work orders.
3. Metal Cutting and Processing
- Cut metal sheets, plates, and strips to required sizes and shapes based on technical drawings or instructions.
- Ensure clean, accurate, and straight cuts with minimal material wastage.
- Monitor the cutting process and make adjustments if necessary.
- Remove finished pieces and prepare them for further fabrication processes.
4. Quality Control
- Inspect finished cuts to ensure they meet required measurements and quality standards.
- Identify and correct cutting defects such as burrs, uneven edges, or dimensional inaccuracies.
- Report any equipment malfunction or material defects to the supervisor.
5. Equipment Maintenance
- Perform routine maintenance on shearing machines including cleaning, lubrication, and blade inspection.
- Check blades regularly for wear or damage and report when replacements are needed.
- Ensure machines are in good working condition before and after use.
6. Safety Compliance
- Follow workplace safety policies when operating shearing equipment.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, ear protection, and safety shoes.
- Ensure machine guards and emergency stop systems are functioning properly.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or technical certificate in:
- Metal Fabrication
- Mechanical Engineering Technology
- Industrial Manufacturing
- Welding and Fabrication or related field.
EXPERIENCES
1–3 years of experience operating shearing machines in fabrication or manufacturing environments.
Experience working with sheet metal, steel plates, or metal fabrication processes is preferred.
